It is on the day of Maha Shivaratri, Lord Shiva revealed his Lingam form. The Gods, Brahma and Vishnu had a dispute to know was the supreme God among the two. Thus, Lord Shiva emerged as the pillar of light in the form of Linga. That occurrence took place on the 14th day of Magha month (Hindu Calendar). Since then, the day is celebrated as Maha Shivratri. Masa Shivratri is observed on the 13th night/14th day of every month. Another interesting story is that on this day when Lord Shiva got married.
